Portrait show: “New Heroes” at Somerville Media Center in June

For the month of June, my series of portraits will be on view at the Somerville Media Center, 90 Union Square.
It’s open Monday-Thursday Noon to 10 PM, Friday & Saturday 10 AM to 4 PM, and closed Sunday and Holidays.

This collection of portraits celebrates people I know and admire for being truly themselves. My heroes are the ones who are not afraid to be genuine, and make the world a more fun and interesting place– also doing the emotional work that lets others feel safer being their own weird selves too. When we feel safe to be our genuine selves in all our diversity, we can relate to others genuinely and without fear. This is part of what can save the world. Therefore, the nonconformists, artists, queers, performers, unique individuals and risk-takers are my heroes, whose small acts of representation and fun can create big ripples and have great effects.

Some of the portraits are done in a colorful, expressionist painting style, others in a stylized “gypsy punk” pen and ink style, others are drawings heavily digitized for an anime or comic book feel. Working in a range of styles lets me experiment and also suit the look to the subject.

Here’s the Gallery page with an interview video of the Art at SCATV show with Janet Cormier that kicked off the month.
