Collaborating with Cecily Miller of Spark Art and Arlington Public Art, we put 100 locally-sourced, site-specific haiku poems on the Minuteman Bikeway, from Arlington through Lexington and Bedford, for its 25th Anniversary celebration. Each was arrayed on the bikeway path one line at a time, with a spacing of about 30 feet in between, so the haikus could be read sequentially at a walking or biking pace.
My part included graphic design and technical expertise, choosing fonts, laying out and creating the laser cut stencils. Cecily Miller came up with the idea, produced and project managed, put out the call and convened a panel of literary experts to judge the over 400 haikus submitted, and managed teams of volunteers doing the actual painting. The temporary project was done with chalk paint that may last 1-3 months, depending on weather and wear.
