Living in Cambridge, MA, I’d often have to wait at this intersection during my commute. My day was brightened each time by looking at the beautiful carpets displayed in the nearby shop window. Ever since living in Turkey with my family as a child, I’ve loved this art form and the gorgeous geometries of Islamic art in general. Here I give thanks for that experience with my own modern ode to that rich artistic tradition.

The rug shop, Varter’s, is locally woman-owned and run, and they still have beautiful things! The box stands at the corner of Pleasant and Brighton streets and was painted in summer of 2020 as part of the Belmont Art Association’s “Transforming Belmont” initiative.
Created as part of the 2020 “Transforming Belmont” initiative sponsored by the Belmont Art Association.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Belmont Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
